MY CITY

Gadarwara is a city and a municipality in Narsinghpur district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India.Gadarwara is famous for production of Pulses(Lentils). Almost all varieties of Lentils are available in this small town. Gadarwara has record no. of Lentil producing mills(approx. 90).

Gadarwara is located at 22°55′N 78°47′E / 22.92°N 78.78°E / 22.92; 78.78. It has an average elevation of 342 metres (1122 feet). Sakkar river flows through Gadarwara. Gadarwara is also known for its fertile land and major sugarcane producer in the range.[citation needed],

The facts and figures are more, Gadarwara is really a beautiful city and has got lots of heritage surrounding to it. It has got a big coal mine known as Gotetoria somewhere 15 km from the city. A beautiful hill station Panchmari is also 80 km from the city which lures a lot of visitors all over India. There is one beautiful temple In the city know as Damru Ghaanti which basically comprises A large Shiva Statue and a huge shiv linga turns out thousands of devotees on Mahashivaratri Purva, besides this Narmada River is 20 km away from the city.

Its also has given birth to the Bigwigs like Osho Rajnish( belongs to a JAIN family ) and other than him Ashutosh Rana ( Real Name Ashutosh Neekhra ) and National Politician Mr Rameshwar Neekhra who has been MP in 1984 Congress Government and Heading the Bar Council Of Madhya Pradesh for more than 10 years.

Being the origin of Saint Osho Rajnish, this place becomes the tourist city for the Americans and other follower from Australia and Europe. It have got souvenir left behind after him, some are like his school his house his other belonging also his small Ashram.

As per The imperial gazetteer of India (Volume 4).(page 55 of 58) Gadawara. — Flourishing mercantile town in Narsinghpur District, Central Provinces; situated on the left bank of the river Shakar, on the main road from Jabalpur (Jubbulpore) to Mumbai(Bombay), and 30 miles west of Narsinghpur civil station. Lat. 22° 55' 30" n., long. 78° 50' e. A Station on the Great Indian Peninsular Railway; is situated 2 miles south of the town, whence a branch railway runs to the Mohpani coal-fields 14 miles farther south-south-east. Population (1881) 8100, chiefly tradesmen and artisans. Hindus numbered 6,553; Kabir-panthis, 48; Muhammadans, 1,012; Christians, 6; Jains, 353; and aboriginal tribes, 128. The town possesses a considerable manufacture of cotton cloth, and the dyers are numerous and fairly skilful. Gadawara is a great entrepot for grain and cotton from Eastern Bhopal,Bhilsa, Sagar, etc. The carriers take back salt, ^//r or crude sugar, and piece-goods. Exports by rail in 1881 amounted to 812,951 maiinds or 595,796 cwts.; imports by rail, 152,586 inaunds or 111,716 cwts. The public offices until 1874 were in the small fortress on the river bank (now falling into decay), built by a family of Gond Rajputs in the early days of Maratha rule. English and vernacular boys' school; post-office; police station.

There were, in 1881, only two towns in Narsinghpur District with a population exceeding 5000 — Narsinghpur,the District capital (population, 10,222), and Gadarwara (8100).

Narsinghpur and Gadarwara were the only trading towns of the District in 1881. Hitherto, the only export of consequence has been cotton. The manufactures consist of brass and bell-metal vessels at Chichli; a kind of stamped cotton fabric at Gadarwara; The mineral resources of the District give rise to an important industry among the Gond inhabitants. At Mohpani, 11 miles from the Gadarwara railway station, excavations for coal have been made with success in the gorge by which the Chita-Rewa leaves the Satpura table-land.

According to Gazetteer published by the district in the district of Narsinghpur, about 10 K.M. away from Gadarwara , village called 'Bhatra' certain "Fossil of animals ". The area of Bohani (10 K.M. away from Gadarwara) is related with Jasraj father of Aalaha Udal & uncle Bachraj, who were Kings during the period of King Prithavi Raj Chouhan. During the various Historical excavations, various ancients monuments & reference also found which relates this area with ancient periods, exact information about the area is found in history books & Historical Manuscripts from second century AD.

Some more facts found in history: During second Century this area was under the rule of Satvahans. Form 4th century the area was under the GUPT KINGDOM, during which King Samudra Gupt succeed extending the areas of his Kingdom in Central India & Western part of India In 6th Century there are certain indications of padi Kingdom. The area was under control of Father & Uncle of Aalh Udal. who made Bohani as their center after this during 4th century ,this area was part of Raj Gond Vansh Empire. At the time of Gond Vansh Gadarwara lost its center position. Chouragard (Chougan) became the capital and Chichali become the center of administration, Gadarwara was only a part of kingdom.

That time Gadarwara known as Gadariya Kheda, because there was a big population of the Gadariya community (The factory farmers of the sheep & Got).

In year 1785, Madhavji Bhonsle purchased the area of Mandla & Narmada ghati in 27 lakhs & the name Gadarwara came into existence, that time the whole area(Narsinghpur, Gadarwara, chichali,chawarpatha) was known as Gadarwara Pargana.

British period: After the Battle of Sitabardi Nagpur, this area came under the control of British rule in 1917, which was confirmed by an alliance in 1926. In this period the area was known as Gadarwara pargana. Chichli & Gangai. The Gond Jagirs were under Marathas, where as Sindhiya had given Barha & Paloha Jagirs to Pindari Sardars, Chitu & Karim Khan. In 1818 British army captured fort of Chouragarh & in 1830 the control of this area was given to a committee. During British rule the Administration of this district was further improved & in 1836 the area was partitioned & was merged in Hoshangabad district. But after Bundela revolt in 1843 Gadarwara was once again reinstated in Narsignpur district.

The British had once again partitioned the district & merged it with Hoshangabad district. When country got independence in 1947 on 15 August, a new era started in this town. After 9 years of independence when states were reorganized on the basis of languages, Gadarwara once again became part of Narsinghpur district.
